Slawomir Bess
1966 - 2024
North Merchiston Table Tennis Club are saddened to inform you that Slawomir Bess, one of most cherished and popular club members, passed away last weekend after a long battle with cancer.
He is survived by long-term partner Marta and son Patrick.
Slawomir played for the club for 11 seasons and this year would have been his 12th season had he been able to play. It may surprise some of you that last season Slav played on despite undergoing several rounds of chemotherapy. His love for the game was great and after every treatment he could barely wait to get back to the table, even making time for extra morning training sessions. We will remember Slav as a fun-loving, friendly man who nonetheless took his table tennis matches seriously with a very competitive spirit! On his day, his skill at the table was unmatched with a fast aggressive attacking game.
At the club we all miss him greatly and we also know that there are many players throughout the league who will remember him fondly, especially of course those who played on the same team as him during his playing career who may now be at other clubs. I personally have particularly fond memories of Season 2017/18 when our team (Slav, Gerry Ma, myself) battled to 2nd place in Div 3 (see photo below with Slav on left)
